What Rules Are You Using?

Our rules govern how we react to certain situations. If you are not happy with your reactions, perhaps you need new rules.

Here are some questions to ask of yourself:

  • What rules am I following?
  • Who wrote those rules?
  • What qualifications or authority does that person or organisation have to write those rules?
  • Are the rules valid?
  • What rule could I follow that would allow me to do something different?
  • Who wrote those rules?
  • What was the origin of those rules?
  • Are these new rules valid?
  • What are the consequences of staying with old rules?
  • What are the consequences of moving to the new rules?

Remember, some of the rules will be formalised and in writing. Some will be unwritten and assumed.

What other questions can you ask yourself about the rules you are following?
